Incessant and incoherent talking and restlessness, promised to take his medicine on condition that I threw it into the fire first, objected to my looking at or examining him. William Lewis, Brynhyfryd and patient's son Edward states that he tried to hit and strangle them, his wife and others and report that he refuses food and drink and tried to throw the furniture about. Physical/Mental State at Examination: Health good. A quiet steady man who became insane after attending a few of the religious revival meetings in a chapel . His brother Evan Thomas died here about 18 months ago. He is married but has no children.

Current Diagnosis: Schizoaffective disorder (F25.0)

Case Notes

1905 Jan 8 - Good condition, of average height. Brown irides, pupils contracted.

General bodily organs healthy but has a right inguinal hernia and is wearing no truss.

Mentally suffering from Acute Mania of a religious type. He was fairly quiet the first two days after admission but since then has become noisy, violent and incoherent and tries to injure himself.

So far he has not refused food but has slept badly. (Dates of subsequent notes are obscured by the death certificate) - So far has not refused food but has slept badly.

- Still noisy and violent. Takes his food, has a little sleep.

- Still very noisy and excited.

Dirty and destructive.

- Now in the Sick Ward. Has some Erysipelas on his right forearm which is mending.

- Today he has some diarrhoea. Temp. normal. Very confused and rambling.

- Not improving in any way, restless and troublesome. Is losing flesh and has attacks of Diarrhoea.

- Rather better and works with shoemaker.

- Rather worse and unfit to be trusted at work. - Better again.

1909 Jan 11 - Now in bed seriously ill with Pneumonia. Died 14th Jan 1909.

The brother referred to here, Evan Wynne Thomas, was admitted three times - 1891, 1899 and 1903 - each time with mania.

He died of enteritis in 1903.
