  1. Dear Joanna, I was very interested to read of this project as I’m a historian of contemporary medicine at the University of Manchester. My research interests include the history of the NHS and working lives and I’d be interested to know whether the archives include information about psychiatrists and other staff who treated patients. I’ve just applied to the ESRC in collaboration with the Royal College of Psychiatrists for funding for a PhD to research the experiences of migrant doctors who came to Britain and worked in psychiatry. It would be interesting to know whether Denbigh attracted migrant doctors. We also have a mental health group in Manchester that meets regularly and has a mixed membership of academics, clinicians and other interested people and you may be interested in either promoting the project via this group or coming to talk to them about the work.
I look forward to hearing from you.

    Best
    Stephanie

  2. This Sunday night on S4C at 9.00pm – Lleisiau Ysbyty Dimbach – The Voices of Denbigh Asylum. A short film of Manon Steffan Ros’ short story based on the hospital notes of former patient Mary Ellen Doughan – which has already been posted on this website – will be shown as part of the programme. As well as a film of Aled Jones Williams’ new play ‘Ar Lan y Mor’, a new piece of work also inspired by his reading of medical notes from the old asylum.

  3. Have just been watching a wonderful programme Lleisiau Ysbyty Dimbach (has been on my planner a while) – it has given me inspiration to start writing again – I trained as a nurse in Denbigh from 1990 to 1993 before moving to work in Bangor. I was inspired to write some poetry (in between revising!) so i shall go and find it and rediscover some personal history – thanks, Andy
